BELIEF

Our generation literally holds the world in our hands. The need to bring about positive change is real and urgent. We believe our buildings must play an integral role in this change and that with the pursuit of architecture comes an inherent responsibility.

We believe buildings that seek a balance between the natural and built environments, through form, materiality and integrated energy systems will also facilitate spaces that guide us, invigorate us, rest us, seduce us and inspire us.

We have a passionate desire to design such buildings, buildings that contribute true quality to the life of the individual, the community and our world and imbue a deep reverence for time, place and the beauty of life.

CLIMATE ACTION

The studios roof top 15kw photovoltaic array generates over 2.5 times our electrical needs. Additionally our practice and travel is further offset through the extensive local planting of native trees.

TESTIMONIALS

We are proud to have helped many clients realise their dream homes and buildings. The following testimonials, more than anything, explain why we love doing what we do.

"Sparks Architects responded to our brief with creativity and enthusiasm and the concept was soon agreed between us. Both the design and 18 month construction period were a logistics challenge as we were living 12,000 kilometers away and only meeting with the team every 3 months or so. Sparks Architects rose to the challenge, visiting us overseas and working very effectively with us via telephone, Skype and email. Sparks Architects are talented architects with a love of fine design and quality detailing, coupled with a terrific eye for aesthetics. Their collaborative way of working with clients and builders delivers special buildings. We are delighted with our beautiful Sparks Architects house."

“Pavilions”

“The home Sparks Architects designed for us gives us pleasure every day we are here. Thinking back on our design brief, Sparks Architects not only “nailed it”, they added elements of beauty and utility which truly exceeded our expectations. Special features of the house design, for us, are the light, the multiple site lines/aspects/spaces and the tying together of beach and bush. We have what we dreamed of and more. It is a beautiful, liveable house, which maximises its location. The design process with Sparks Architects was happy, personal and highly collaborative. They listened to us, developed and debated options where there were challenges, worked to realise our overall vision and to clarify and guide our more confused ideas. And they appreciated that the budget is a real element of a successful project. We in turn appreciated their expertise, instinct about what would work best and collaborative approach. We could not have hoped for a better outcome.”

“Edge of the Forest”

“When we went to Sparks Architects with a basic concept for a beach house, they took our ideas and moulded them into exactly what we wanted. It was a pleasure to work with them and we were in awe of their imagination and innovation. The house was complex, containing many novel features and we were particularly pleased with the cooperation between the architects and the builders during the construction. As a result six years on we have a house that we are completely satisfied with and despite the harsh beach conditions is standing the test of time.”

“Headland House”

“We found 10 acres of paradise in Montville and Sparks Architects helped us fulfil our dream. Sparks’ innovative design ideas came were a result of our brief to create a sustainable home suited to our needs and in keeping with the bush setting in which we now live. Throughout the project they were totally professional and attentive to our wishes. We could not have hoped for a better outcome.”

"Valley House”

“As a semi-retired couple, we engaged Sparks Architects to provide us with a home capable of accommodating the needs of an extended family of four generations during visits but still manageable for us during our day to day lives. We requested that as much as possible be retained of the original two bedroom block structure but we wished to enjoy privacy whilst engaging the superb view over the Glasshouse Mountains which the site embraced. We were delighted with the outcome and impressed by the attention to detail that the firm addressed in our planning discussions and indeed, throughout the entire building process. We were also very grateful that the architecture focused on practical design and on a ” green environmental” building providing us with a result that we were proud – a significant bonus in our view”.

“Butterfly”

"Our brief for Sparks Architects was to convert an old block of 3 units into a beautiful beach house. Dan and his team have excelled themselves, creating a modern home with an ingenious design that takes full advantage of the local seaside environment. This includes various open, yet private, living and dining spaces full of light, and cooled by sea breezes, as well as a downstairs studio for guests. We are very proud of our new home, and very grateful to Sparks Architects for designing such an iconic asset for our family, and a wonderful environment for welcoming friends."

“Frangipani”

“The Barn is a project that our family had envisaged for over 15 years, without knowing exactly in what form it would take, or where it would be located. The brief was to create a space for extended family and friends to enjoy, capturing the essence of places we enjoy across the Pacific, and befitting to a rural retreat setting that embedded itself in amongst the natural landscape setting. Dan and the team simply exceeded all expectations, managing the project well beyond the initial scope, to deliver what is a truly remarkable environment that brings immense joy to us all.”

“The Barn”

“The house is a joy to live in and every day we appreciate its design and form even more. The design suits the environment and landscape perfectly and is a comfortable and welcoming space both for us and our very appreciative visitors. The apparently simple form hides the work involved in making it an efficient space perfectly suited to our cool climate. The design and construction process was very straight forward with Sparks working with our builder to achieve a wonderful outcome – a stunning home that nestles into the landscape and maximises the views.”

“Bunya”

“We are absolutely delighted with our apartment. Dan’s enormous contribution, in terms of developing our relatively unformed ideas for an industrial-style loft apartment, created a very sophisticated and chic space; a perfect area to display our art collection.
Throughout the process, Sparks worked with us, our builder, and suppliers to quickly resolve issues. Dan also supported us with decision making when selecting fixtures and fittings to provide a wonderful consistency in the final result.
One of our favourite aspects is to view the box structure from the open living area where it’s true beauty and symmetry is revealed.”

“Art Box”

“The external angles and moodiness of the house on approach creates an immediate desire to see what's inside; arriving is an event. The inter-connected indoor and outdoor areas offer variety of experiences, and smart separation of the areas means smaller groups or individuals can go to watch tv, gym or read a book without disturbing others. No matter where you are in the house, access to stunning views creates a calming influence but can also entertain in the form of rolling storms, ocean going activity or eagles soaring above the treetops. Every day here is a new one."

“Mt Mellum”

“Pandanus” gives us a sophisticated, yet relaxed home where we can enjoy sea views whilst protected from harsh weather. The flowing ground floor living space suits our style of entertaining; connecting the indoor and outdoor living areas. The upper floor allows us a quiet retreat into bedrooms with green space and sea views beyond. We enjoy the privacy provided by the arrangement of the spaces, and the surrounding garden. Being able to live comfortably connected to the environment, rather than ‘boxed’ in an air-conditioned space makes this a truly relaxing escape for us and our family when they visit.”

“Pandanus”

“We approached Dan Sparks of Sparks Architects to design a family home on our acreage property. We tasked Sparks architects to design a house that maximised the view of the subtropical rainforest with reliance on natural lighting, heating and cooling. Our desired life would focus on outdoor living within our own parcel of paradise. Whilst Sparks Architects had significant creative and design freedom we were continually challenged by concepts that would both excite and provoke our assumptions of possibilities for our future house. Fast forward and we now live in an amazing Tent House that has encapsulated our desired lifestyle. Reusing timber from our block in our beautiful reveals, and living with reliance on only natural heating and cooling has been an important achievement to us. Living within the functional artwork of our tent with retractable roofs and floating bedroom with concealable walls has brought us ongoing delight. It is a home that nailed the brief of an architectural work of art but more importantly has a satisfying and pleasurably functionality as our family home that we enjoy every day.”
